Meet Lev

Lev’s daughter, Lily, recently took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT). According to Lev, Lily is a very driven and motivated student. Although she’s only 14 years old, she has a pretty solid understanding of what she wants to do and where she wants to go. This conviction led them to apply for admission to a local private school. We sat down with Lev to learn more about their test-preparation process.

The Challenge

Lily needed to achieve a high SSAT score in order to be a stand-out applicant at her school of choice–Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, New York. Given the highly competitive nature of Poly Prep’s admissions, Lev and Lily knew they needed the best test-preparation program possible to secure a spot.

The Solution

During Lev’s extensive research on different test-prep companies, he came across 91. After looking into the practice materials and curriculum, he decided it was the right choice. His decision was further confirmed by a glowing recommendation from a friend of his daughter’s who had used 91 the year prior.

Lev wanted to ensure that Lily was as prepared as possible for test day, so he set up a consultation with a 91 tutor, Erin. Based on that initial conversation, he knew that he wanted Erin to work with Lily, despite her extremely busy schedule. He saw that Erin would not only be the perfect tutor to help teach Lily the test material, but more importantly, to give her the motivation and confidence boost she needed to succeed on the test. Lev was also impressed with Erin’s personality and professionalism. In fact, Lev was impressed with the credentials of all of the 91 tutors, who had the degrees and experience that helped them stand out as exceptional instructors.

In his initial consultation with Erin, Lev learned more about the structure of the program. He liked that the one-on-one tutoring would be tailored to his daughter’s needs, and that Erin would maintain an open line of communication with him, providing a written follow-up after each lesson so that he could keep track of Lily’s progress.

Preparation Process

Before starting her prep, Lily knew a lot of the content tested on the SSAT. She just needed extra help to really zero in on her weaknesses. The 91 system identified where Lily needed improvement and encouraged her to concentrate her limited time on the most important areas. With only two to three months to prepare, this focus was critical.

Ultimately, Lily was successful both on the test and in securing a spot at Poly Prep. Lev states that “obviously, based on her progress reports, her test results, and her overall participation in extracurricular activities” she was accepted. However, he emphasizes that “none of that would’ve happened if she didn’t get where she needed to be as far as the test score.” He was “extremely pleased and satisfied with the results that [91] provided.” He also credits Erin’s work with Lily as a reason for her success.

Lev’s advice to other parents is to ensure that they find the absolute best program for their child. He shared that during his search, he was unable to “come across any real competitors for 91.” He praises 91 for their all-inclusive packages, which include a user-friendly web portal, excellent practice tests, and tutoring programs. He says that “some sites might have filled in certain bits and pieces but not on an all-inclusive level.”

What stands out for Lev about 91 is the structure the testing platform presents. It allows you to do “an in-depth analysis of the knowledge of the specific student and because you are successful in identifying the problem you’re getting so much closer to resolving that problem by addressing the specific needs of the student.” Different students will always have different needs, but 91 is able to address every student’s needs through its personalized, data-driven approach. This approach is what Lev found most important in identifying the test-prep program for his daughter.

Meet Kate and Brady

Kate’s son, Brady, recently took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) in hopes of gaining admission to Lakeside School for the start of 6th grade. Brady is a very strong student, but like many of his peers, the SSAT was a new challenge for him. To ensure he was best prepared, Kate researched test-preparation options to help Brady practice the material and learn the strategies needed to succeed.

Kate and Brady’s SSAT Preparation

During her test-preparation search, Kate found a few options, but none were as comprehensive as 91. She was impressed by the full-length practice tests that mirrored the official test as well as the hundreds of additional practice exercises. More importantly, the easy-to-use online platform made it possible for Brady to practice independently and at his own pace. As Brady took practice tests, Kate liked being able to see how competitive his scores were for the schools he was applying to. After each practice test, Brady found the recommended practice exercises to be especially helpful because he knew exactly what to focus on during his practice in order to improve. In addition to using the online platform, Kate and Brady enlisted the support and guidance of a 91 tutor, Matthew. Matthew’s patient and empathetic approach during their 1-on-1 sessions helped Brady build on his unique strengths, unlocking his full potential.

Kate and Brady’s Success

In the end, all of Brady’s hard work and dedication paid off, and he was accepted to Lakeside School. He was able to confidently tackle the material that he hadn’t learned before, and his SSAT scores improved greatly from his first practice test to the actual test.

Josh and Ellie’s Challenge

Josh’s daughter, Ellie, took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) in hopes of gaining admission to an independent school for ninth grade. When Ellie initially took the test, one of the biggest struggles she faced was effectively managing her time on unfamiliar questions. She unknowingly spent too much time trying to answer questions designed to challenge students in higher grade levels, and as a result, lost time that could have been spent answering questions she did know.

Working with 91

After Ellie did not achieve her desired scores, Josh sought out test-preparation resources to help her. Josh was excited when he found 91 because the site’s detailed analyses provided insight into how Ellie was doing, and the targeted recommendations guided Ellie’s practice.

In addition to using the 91 platform, Josh and Ellie enlisted the support and guidance of one of 91’ expert tutors, Erin. Erin and Ellie worked on techniques and methods for taking the test, and they went over the material that Ellie was less familiar with. By helping her understand the content and by equipping her with test-taking skills, Erin helped Ellie tackle her test anxiety and gain a newfound confidence.

Josh and Ellie’s Success

In the end, Ellie was proud of her test results and extremely satisfied with the overall test-preparation process. After hard work and dedication, her test scores dramatically improved, and as a result, she was accepted into her dream school!

Josh was impressed by the knowledge and test-taking confidence Ellie gained, which allowed her to make incredible improvements towards her target scores. Josh found the analysis tool that revealed how Ellie ranked in comparison to her peers, as well as 91’ school data, very insightful in determining how competitive Ellie’s scores were for the schools she was applying to.

Noodle Pros, a team of experienced professional educators, is a 91 partner based in New York City. Drawing on their collective expertise, they provide online and in-person high-stakes test prep and academic tutoring to students across fourteen states and three countries.

Kelly Clement is an expert SSAT and ISEE tutor with Noodle Pros, who has worked as an educator throughout the U.S. and internationally for her entire career. She started her career as a study-skills teacher in the Caribbean, and then taught middle school English and Humanities for 12 years. By design, she immersed herself in very different demographics and types of schools to gain a broad understanding of different students. Neil Seltzer, Noodle Pros’ CEO, sat down with Clement to talk about how students can best prepare for the SSAT and ISEE. Check out Clement’s answers to Seltzer’s five burning questions.

Neil Seltzer: Can’t you just buy a book?
Kelly Clement: The easy answer is no, you can’t just buy a book. For various reasons, prep books aren’t going to be relevant for every student. Though they may work great for some students, it’s hard to tell which one will be best for you. Some books skew harder while others skew easier.

NS: How long does it take to prepare?
KC: There is no easy, one-size-fits-all answer. As soon as you find out that you may need to take the SSAT or ISEE, your student should take an initial practice test. This will allow you to see where your student’s starting point is. By taking an initial practice test, you gain a better understanding of how much he or she will need to prepare and in which sections. From there, you can build out your student’s prep plan.

NS: How much do scores matter?
KC: Scores aren’t the singular factor in the application process, but they are important. Each school will value the scores differently depending on its own needs for that specific class. Although they aren’t the most important part of the application process, you can’t wing it.

NS: Is test prep necessary?
KC: Short answer, yes. The ISEE and SSAT are written to be challenging for all students. They are intended to discover what your student knows and how they manage unfamiliar questions. If the test covered basic knowledge that every student in 7th grade should know, every 7th grader would do well. Because both the ISEE and SSAT are scored normatively, the competitiveness of this group of students adds another degree of difficulty.

NS: What if you move mid-year?
KC: Don’t fret. Even though there is a distinct application season, schools tend to have rolling admissions beyond the standard date. Most students who are operating within that main application season will need to submit their materials by early- or mid-January, so they’ll be taking the exam between September and December, maybe even early January. However, schools will consider and accept applications at various times of the year. Most of the time, especially with some help from a local admissions expert, students are able to find a placement regardless of the time of year.

ACT and SAT Scores May Not Be Required but They Can Help You Stand Out! /blog/act-and-sat-scores-can-help-you/ Mon, 11 May 2020 21:08:00 +0000 /?p=1897 Because scores may be optional, submitting your test scores is a great way for you to shine. The post ACT and SAT Scores May Not Be Required but They Can Help You Stand Out! appeared first on 91.

Due to COVID-19, many ACT and SAT test dates have been canceled. In light of these cancelations, many colleges and universities, such as the University of California system, Haverford College in Pennsylvania, and Trinity University in Texas, have decided to make test scores an optional part of their applications. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still prepare and take them.

Why should you still take the ACT or SAT if some schools don’t require scores?

Because scores may be optional, submitting your test scores is a great way for you to shine. Preparing for and taking the ACT and SAT shows your dedication to the college application process, and, if your scores are solid, they will likely add to your overall application.

Additionally, schools benefit from seeing your scores because scores are the only standardized measure schools have to compare students. That’s not to say there aren’t other important components of the college application; indeed there are. However, as it pertains to academic aptitude, many universities still consider ACT and SAT scores to be a reliable comparative measure. What about GPA, you may ask? Grading is vastly different from school to school, even from teacher to teacher, so comparing GPAs is not always a fair comparison. As an example, some schools use a 95-100 scale for the letter grade A, whereas others use a 90-100 scale. A student’s GPA at a school that uses a 95-100 scale should not be compared to a student’s GPA at a school that uses a 90-100 scale because the measures used to determine GPA are vastly different.

On top of positioning yourself as a better candidate, taking the ACT and SAT also helps strengthen important skills that will serve you well in the long run. Test preparation helps you develop and improve problem solving, time management, and critical thinking skills. And, if your school year has been affected by the pandemic, you might benefit from the extra science, reading, math, and vocabulary practice.

Across the globe, people are strongly encouraged or even mandated to practice social distancing in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing as a response to a viral pandemic is nothing new. In fact, the strategy of social distancing saved thousands of lives during the 1918 Spanish flu. As I am sure you can imagine, though, social distancing during 1918 was quite a bit different than it is today. Today’s technological world allows us to stay connected with such ease that virtual communication has become second nature. The silver lining during this difficult time is that we can still be connected.

Below is a list of our favorite ways to stay social while practicing social distancing.

Phone Calls
Now is a great time to practice the age-old tradition of calling your friends and family. Phone calls are a simple and quick way to stay in touch.

Pro tip:Use headphones and put your phone in your pocket so that you can multitask while talking on the phone.

Emails
We all know that emails are an effective way to send information digitally, but this is a great time to use email to reach out to family and friends in a meaningful way. You can send a weekly update and check-in email to loved ones or share funny videos and memes.

Pro tip:Include a few pictures in your weekly update emails. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Video Chats
Although you can’t see your friends and family in person, you can still see them through video chat! Video chats make it possible to have lunch, play games, and even work out with friends and family. There are many free, easy-to-use video chat programs available, including Facebook Messenger, Facetime, Skype, and Zoom.

Social Challenges
If social media is more your speed, you can participate in one of the many social media challenges that are flooding the internet. One Instagram challenge is the Workout Challenge, where you complete an exercise, post a video of it to your story, and then challenge your friends to do the same. For example, one workout challenge is “See 10 pushups, do 10 pushups.” The workout challenges are a great way to stay connected and stay active. Our favorite social challenge is “See a pup, post a pup,” where you post a picture or video of your dog and then nominate your friends to do the same.

Social challenges may seem a little silly, but they help spread some joy and positivity during a stressful time.

Netflix Party
is a Google Chrome extension that allows you to watch a Netflix show with friends and family at the same time. When the host starts the show, it will start for the participants as well, and when the host pauses the show, it will do the same for everyone else. There’s even a chat feature that allows you and your friends to talk about what you’re watching in real time.

As schools around the world are closing, students and their families are tasked with the challenge of transitioning to online and remote learning. The foundation of successful remote learning is maintaining a consistent schedule. Below is an example of a schedule that can help students be successful during their time at home.

7:30am- Morning Routine
Start the day like you would any other school day—get dressed, eat breakfast, do morning chores, etc. This will help students get in the school mindset while at home.

8:30am- Learning Time
Start theschool dayby working on school-assigned tasks or other academic activities. If students don’t have school-assigned work, educational workbooks, writing, and reading are all great ways to continue learning while school is closed. Check out yourlocal public library’sdigital resources and theselearning resourcesfor more ideas.

10:00am- Break and Snack
Keep in mind that kids get breaks at school, so they should get the same breaks at home.

10:30am- Educational Screen Time
Continue working on school-assigned work or engage in educational screen time. There are many educational programs that are available for free, either online or through streaming services. Countlessmuseums, zoos, aquariums, historical landmarks, national parks, and Broadway showscan be accessed virtually. If you subscribe to any streaming services, has put together a great list of educational programs available for kids organized by age group.

12:00pm- Lunch
Lunch is a great opportunity to take a break and spend some quality time as a family. Having your kids home all day may have you wishing for extra time in the day, so involve them in household tasks, such as making lunch. Cooking together as a family is fun for kids, and learning how to cook gives them a valuable, life-long skill.

1:00pm- Quiet Time
When everyone is home, things are bound to get a little chaotic at times. Quiet time is beneficial for everyone. For kids, this is a good time to read a book, continue working on school-assigned work or other learning activities, or allow your child to choose what they would like to work on independently. For parents, this is a good time to schedule anything that you need to get done, such as meetings or working on projects that require limited distractions.

2:00pm- Freeplay
It is important for children to stay active. If the weather is nice, take a walk as a family or play outside. If the weather isn’t great or you can’t get outside, be sure to still give your child time to be active.

3:00pm- Learning Time
As the day winds down, spend the last part of theschool dayfinishing any assigned schoolwork or other academic activities. If everything is already completed, children can use this time for a little educational screen time, to read a book, to play an educational game, or to focus on their creative side by working on some art or music.

5:00pm- Family Time/Dinner
Theschool dayis officially over! Even though it may seem like you spent the whole day together, take time to sit down as a family, without distractions, talk about how the day went, make a plan for the following day, enjoy dinner together, and choose a fun activity to do as a family such as playing a board game or a round of cards.

7:00pm- Freetime Before Bed
Finish the day with some freetime to help your kids unwind and relax before doing it all again tomorrow.

We hope this schedule provides some guidance for you and your family as you navigate remote learning. Stay tuned for more information!
