Meet Lev

Lev’s daughter, Lily, recently took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT). According to Lev, Lily is a very driven and motivated student. Although she’s only 14 years old, she has a pretty solid understanding of what she wants to do and where she wants to go. This conviction led them to apply for admission to a local private school. We sat down with Lev to learn more about their test-preparation process.

The Challenge

Lily needed to achieve a high SSAT score in order to be a stand-out applicant at her school of choice–Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, New York. Given the highly competitive nature of Poly Prep’s admissions, Lev and Lily knew they needed the best test-preparation program possible to secure a spot.

The Solution

During Lev’s extensive research on different test-prep companies, he came across 91. After looking into the practice materials and curriculum, he decided it was the right choice. His decision was further confirmed by a glowing recommendation from a friend of his daughter’s who had used 91 the year prior.

Lev wanted to ensure that Lily was as prepared as possible for test day, so he set up a consultation with a 91 tutor, Erin. Based on that initial conversation, he knew that he wanted Erin to work with Lily, despite her extremely busy schedule. He saw that Erin would not only be the perfect tutor to help teach Lily the test material, but more importantly, to give her the motivation and confidence boost she needed to succeed on the test. Lev was also impressed with Erin’s personality and professionalism. In fact, Lev was impressed with the credentials of all of the 91 tutors, who had the degrees and experience that helped them stand out as exceptional instructors.

In his initial consultation with Erin, Lev learned more about the structure of the program. He liked that the one-on-one tutoring would be tailored to his daughter’s needs, and that Erin would maintain an open line of communication with him, providing a written follow-up after each lesson so that he could keep track of Lily’s progress.

Preparation Process

Before starting her prep, Lily knew a lot of the content tested on the SSAT. She just needed extra help to really zero in on her weaknesses. The 91 system identified where Lily needed improvement and encouraged her to concentrate her limited time on the most important areas. With only two to three months to prepare, this focus was critical.

Ultimately, Lily was successful both on the test and in securing a spot at Poly Prep. Lev states that “obviously, based on her progress reports, her test results, and her overall participation in extracurricular activities” she was accepted. However, he emphasizes that “none of that would’ve happened if she didn’t get where she needed to be as far as the test score.” He was “extremely pleased and satisfied with the results that [91] provided.” He also credits Erin’s work with Lily as a reason for her success.

Lev’s advice to other parents is to ensure that they find the absolute best program for their child. He shared that during his search, he was unable to “come across any real competitors for 91.” He praises 91 for their all-inclusive packages, which include a user-friendly web portal, excellent practice tests, and tutoring programs. He says that “some sites might have filled in certain bits and pieces but not on an all-inclusive level.”

What stands out for Lev about 91 is the structure the testing platform presents. It allows you to do “an in-depth analysis of the knowledge of the specific student and because you are successful in identifying the problem you’re getting so much closer to resolving that problem by addressing the specific needs of the student.” Different students will always have different needs, but 91 is able to address every student’s needs through its personalized, data-driven approach. This approach is what Lev found most important in identifying the test-prep program for his daughter.

Three Ways to Teach Your Child Self-Advocacy /blog/three-ways-to-teach-children-self-advocacy/ Fri, 30 Jan 2026 09:07:33 +0000 /?p=3099 Self-advocacy is an important skill for your child to develop. Here are three ways for your child to develop this skill.

Your child needs to learn to self-advocate to communicate with others, become independent, and grow into a self-sufficient young person. Self-advocacy includes taking responsibility for speaking up for yourself, knowing how to seek help when needed, and listening to others. Helping your child learn how to express their needs and desires will build the foundation for confidence and self-awareness as they grow older. Here are three ways to help your child develop this important skill:

  1. Learn How to Ask

Often, children have a hard time identifying what is wrong or what they need. Teach your child to express why they want or need something. If they ask for something, prompt them to express why they are asking. That way, you are guiding them to first consider, and then communicate, their needs in a given situation. Encourage them to express their needs both inside and outside of the house. For young children, it can be helpful to offer them scripted words or phrases to use.

  1. Take Responsibility

When children have tasks they can successfully complete, their confidence grows. Try giving your child regular chores or a short list of responsibilities to complete daily. Learning how to handle and practice responsibility positively will build your child’s self-esteem.

  1. Talk About Strengths and Weaknesses

One thing that can help young people self-advocate is knowing their own strengths and weaknesses. Consider different kinds of strengths, and point these out to your child regularly. Take note of their successes! Likewise, being aware of areas for growth is helpful for children. If they are aware of their weaknesses, they can better communicate with teachers and other adults about challenges. Always frame discussions of weaknesses with a “growth mindset”—encouragement will help build your child’s confidence!

Above all, observe and communicate! Learning to self-advocate depends on conversations with parents and role models, as well as consistent encouragement. Give your child the language and the confidence to ask for what they need—and watch their self-advocacy grow.

Meet Kate and Brady

Kate’s son, Brady, recently took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) in hopes of gaining admission to Lakeside School for the start of 6th grade. Brady is a very strong student, but like many of his peers, the SSAT was a new challenge for him. To ensure he was best prepared, Kate researched test-preparation options to help Brady practice the material and learn the strategies needed to succeed.

Kate and Brady’s SSAT Preparation

During her test-preparation search, Kate found a few options, but none were as comprehensive as 91. She was impressed by the full-length practice tests that mirrored the official test as well as the hundreds of additional practice exercises. More importantly, the easy-to-use online platform made it possible for Brady to practice independently and at his own pace. As Brady took practice tests, Kate liked being able to see how competitive his scores were for the schools he was applying to. After each practice test, Brady found the recommended practice exercises to be especially helpful because he knew exactly what to focus on during his practice in order to improve. In addition to using the online platform, Kate and Brady enlisted the support and guidance of a 91 tutor, Matthew. Matthew’s patient and empathetic approach during their 1-on-1 sessions helped Brady build on his unique strengths, unlocking his full potential.

Kate and Brady’s Success

In the end, all of Brady’s hard work and dedication paid off, and he was accepted to Lakeside School. He was able to confidently tackle the material that he hadn’t learned before, and his SSAT scores improved greatly from his first practice test to the actual test.

Josh’s daughter, Ellie, took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) in hopes of gaining admission to an independent school for ninth grade. When Ellie initially took the test, one of the biggest struggles she faced was effectively managing her time on unfamiliar questions. She unknowingly spent too much time trying to answer questions designed to challenge students in higher grade levels, and as a result, lost time that could have been spent answering questions she did know.

Working with 91

After Ellie did not achieve her desired scores, Josh sought out test-preparation resources to help her. Josh was excited when he found 91 because the site’s detailed analyses provided insight into how Ellie was doing, and the targeted recommendations guided Ellie’s practice.

In addition to using the 91 platform, Josh and Ellie enlisted the support and guidance of one of 91’ expert tutors, Erin. Erin and Ellie worked on techniques and methods for taking the test, and they went over the material that Ellie was less familiar with. By helping her understand the content and by equipping her with test-taking skills, Erin helped Ellie tackle her test anxiety and gain a newfound confidence.

Josh and Ellie’s Success

In the end, Ellie was proud of her test results and extremely satisfied with the overall test-preparation process. After hard work and dedication, her test scores dramatically improved, and as a result, she was accepted into her dream school!

Josh was impressed by the knowledge and test-taking confidence Ellie gained, which allowed her to make incredible improvements towards her target scores. Josh found the analysis tool that revealed how Ellie ranked in comparison to her peers, as well as 91’ school data, very insightful in determining how competitive Ellie’s scores were for the schools she was applying to.

The Lower Level Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is intended for students applying to 5th or 6th grade. Here are some tips for preparing your student for the test:

Register In Advance

For the ISEE, students can take the test up to three times a year, once per testing season. The testing seasons are defined by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) as Fall (August – November), Winter (December – March), and Spring/Summer (April – July).

We recommend that students plan to take the test more than once. That way, if the first test doesn’t go quite as planned, they have another opportunity to test. It’s best to schedule both test dates in advance, so that you can secure your preferred testing dates and times. Scheduling two test dates will also help relieve some of the pressure your child may feel as they take the test for the first time. Just make sure you give your child enough time to reset and review in between test dates.

You can register for the official test on the ERB’s .

Learn About the Test

on 91’ site. Your student will have access to:

  • 1 sample ISEE test
  • Interactive diagnostics
  • Score report
  • Personalized Prep Plan

the Lower Level What to Expect on the ISEE Guide published by the ERB. This document details how to register for the test, what to expect, and how it’s scored. The PDF also includes a sample test.

Practice and Prepare

Take several full-length . This gives your student firsthand experience with the test’s format, timing, and question types.

The Lower Level ISEE test takes over 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete, and most students in 4th and 5th grade are not used to sitting for such a long test. Each time your student takes a practice test, treat it as if it were a real test. Set up a quiet area at home, and have your student take the test in one uninterrupted period.

Additionally, we offer a live-proctored This experience mimics the official test day and helps reduce anxiety by showing you exactly what to expect.

Review Your Results

After completing a practice test, review all the questions that were incorrect. Understanding which types of questions your student can improve on will help target their test prep. Formulate a plan to address these concepts in a methodical way.

Utilize the timing data from to help your student allocate their time on questions appropriately. The ISEE is a challenging assessment and there will be concepts, themes, and vocabulary your student hasn’t learned before, so time management is especially crucial.

5 Great Ways to Neutralize Performance Anxiety /blog/5-great-ways-to-neutralize-performance-anxiety/ Wed, 19 Feb 2025 19:27:30 +0000 /?p=3630 Performance anxiety in the office, in the classroom, or on stage isn’t any different than performance anxiety is for an athlete or an executive presenting to their clients. The setting may be different, but the loss of memory, potential to choke, or the failure to implement the strategies or techniques that you’ve spent so much time practicing are all the results of the same mechanism behind what an athlete might experience. So what do we do about it? How do we overcome those feelings? Here are a few ideas and proven strategies to overcome performance anxiety.

The post 5 Great Ways to Neutralize Performance Anxiety appeared first on 91.

]]>

Did you know that stars like Adele and DzԳé struggle sometimes with performance anxiety? Adele has spoken openly about the stage fright she endures before she performs in front of packed stadium audiences on tour.

Even the most talented or accomplished people will find themselves in a high-pressure situation and underperform because of performance anxiety. This is true in every area of performance, from stepping to the line to take a free throw, to completing an important surgery, to taking a high stakes test.

To learn how to overcome performance anxiety, it’s first important to understand what it is. Most of us have experienced what it feels like to lose a train of thought or walk into a room and forget what it is you’re supposed to be doing. But performance anxiety is more complex than just freezing up.

says that performance anxiety is “a pressure that compromises procedural and explicit memory.” Procedural memory is the retaining of the mechanics of an action. Explicit memory is recalling specific details and information needed for a task or question.

Performance anxiety in the office or classroom isn’t any different than performance anxiety experienced by an athlete or famous singer. The setting may be different, but the loss of memory, potential to choke, or failure to implement calming techniques you’ve spent hours and hours practicing are all results of the same mechanism. So what do we do about it? How do we overcome those feelings?

Here are a few ideas and strategies proven to help with performance anxiety:

1.Focus on the outcome, not the mechanics.

Oftentimes, we get so in our heads about what we’re trying to accomplish in the present that we completely lose sight of the overall goal. Especially in high-stakes scenarios, focusing too much on the minutiae of what you’ve practiced can result in making careless mistakes. Remaining relaxed in your thinking will help you clearly recall how to implement everything you’ve practiced leading up to the big day.

2. Write down your worries and concerns.

In a conducted with university students, psychology researcher Hans S. Schroder determined that “expressive writing about one’s worries reduced the size of the negative brain wave signal in people who worried a lot.” Schroder’s experiment found that “offloading” your worries into free form writing makes your brain less reactive and frees up mental resources that you can then use to complete tasks more successfully.

Taking some time to write down what is making you feel anxious is a great starting point to overcoming performance anxiety. Removing some of the mental stress makes space for you to focus on the task at hand.

3. Focus your attention away from your anxiety.

Mindful activities that focus on the breath, like meditation, can help train the mind to not focus on distractions and to remain calm. Frank Diaz, a professor of music education at Indiana University, found in that students who practiced meditation on a regular basis were significantly less prone to music performance anxiety. This is a coping mechanism that takes practice and patience, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t “work” the first time.

If grounding techniques aren’t your thing, you can try focusing your attention away from the task at hand through distraction. Psychologists say that intentional activities, such as mental or physical exercise, can help you shift your focus away from anxious thoughts or feelings, allowing you to redirect your attention to something else. This reduces the intensity of anxiety symptoms and improves your ability to perform under pressure. Essentially, it helps to “take your mind off” the stressful situation by engaging in a different activity. Try listening to your favorite song, picking up a book, or going on a walk!

4. Reinterpret your anxiety as excitement.

If you’re someone who finds it nearly impossible to distract yourself from nervous thoughts, try putting a positive spin on your feelings. Psychology student Mollie Trainor, who is currently working towards her masters degree at the University of Edinburgh, recently discussed the phenomenon in a . Trainor says that “if you have pre-performance anxiety for something coming up, you can trick yourself into thinking you’re excited rather than nervous by just saying out loud to yourself: ‘I am excited.’

Trainor explains that the reason the two feelings are so easily interchanged is because excitement and nervousness are “high-arousal states.” who has also studied the phenomenon backs Trainor up claiming, “the heart beats faster, cortisol surges, and the body prepares for action, with the only difference being excitement is a positive emotion.” This theory, also known as anxious reappraisal, has proven successful in using adrenaline for good!

5. Make your practice as real as possible.

As you prepare for any sort of performance, simulate the real environment as much as possible. When it comes down to it, practice is the best way to acclimate yourself to the pressure of a high-stakes performance. Taking that practice to the next level by simulating the real environment as closely as possible is going to help you do even better. As you acclimate more and more to the pressures surrounding your performance, the better you’ll perform when it really counts. If you’re feeling nervous about an upcoming admissions test, we recommend making use of some of our practice resources. Our website includes a variety of prep materials to help you combat performance anxiety, so you can feel confident and ready on test day.

Recently the makers of the ACT announced three new changes coming to the ACT starting in September of 2020. These changes include online testing, retaking single sections, and superscores.

Starting with the September 2020 national test date, students will have the option to take the ACT online, which produces considerably faster results. Instead of waiting two weeks to receive test results, online testers will receive results in as little as two days. Students who have already taken the full ACT will also be able to retake single sections of the test if they wish, rather than retaking the entire exam. Additionally, students will be able to send schools their ACT “superscore,” which is the average of their four best individual section scores together to create one ACT composite score.

With these three changes, ACT is hoping to bring more direct benefits to students and evolve as a company into the digital age.

Given that ACT will soon allow test-takers to test online, there is a growing need for students to be prepared for this online format. Online testing is one step in helping the ACT break into the digital world and students should expect to shift their ACT practice away from just the traditional test prep; not only preparing themselves for the ACT but also preparing themselves for navigating the new online format as well since many will most likely be doing a section or two of the ACT (or even the full test) online at some point.

How 91 Can Help You Prep

91 provides web-based practice tests, highly individualized diagnostic feedback, and additional practice tailored to each individual student’s area of greatest need. Students start by taking a full-length practice test. Results are available immediately so that students can see how they did on the test, on each question, and where there is room for improvement. The platform provides a personalized prep plan guiding students through additional targeted practice based on their results. Then after some practice, students can take another practice test section or another full-length practice test and see their results improve; all online!

In addition to practicing for the ACT and building test-taking strategies, preparing for the ACT using 91’ web-based platform allows students to simulate and become comfortable with the online test-taking experience before their official test day.

Meet Jen and Henry: the Challenge

Jen’s son, Henry, recently took the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) in the hopes of gaining admittance to The University of Chicago Lab School for 7th grade. The decision to apply was relatively last-minute: they were looking at high school options and saw that The University of Chicago Lab School had an unusually high number of spots open for 7th grade. Deciding it was worth a shot, they started the application process. With only a month to prepare for the ISEE, Jen was looking for a test preparation option that would be flexible enough that they could fit all of their prep into a condensed time frame. She knew that many people took the test multiple times and had months to prepare, but this wasn’t the case for them.

The Solution

When Jen found 91, she thought it would be the perfect solution for her son. Henry is a very organized and self-directed kid, so an online platform that would allow him to work at his own pace seemed like a great option. They decided to also enlist the additional support and guidance of a 91 tutor, Marina, who worked with Henry to give him the key strategies and skills to be successful on the test. Jen loved being able to sign up for online sessions at their convenience, and the seamless connection between Henry’s online practice and his tutoring sessions.

Preparation Process

Every day, Henry would come home by himself and log into the 91 platform. He structured his independent study time by working on the specific question types identified by the system as his weak areas, and learned how to effectively review the answer explanations for the questions he missed, and work through the related practice exercises.

The two parts of the 91 system that Jen and Henry found most helpful were the additional resources, especially the targeted practice exercises, and the analytics that helped to guide Henry’s study time, so that he focused primarily on the areas in which he needed additional work.

The Results

Most importantly, Henry’s hard work and dedication paid off, and he was accepted at The University of Chicago Lab School. He’s excited for the school year to begin this fall.

Jen said that her son made an incredible amount of progress in a very short amount of time. When Henry came out of the official test, he said that it had been easier than all of the practice he had done before. Jen was thrilled with the results and with the overall experience. If she had to do it again, they would start earlier and take advantage of all the tools made available through the 91 platform.

How 91 Can Help You

91 is here to build test confidence through personalized practice. The system dynamically adapts using insights from over 20,000,000 questions answered on their platform to help each individual student focus on the most effective practice. Timing analysis helps students learn effective time management and personalized recommendations target areas of weakness. Combined with a focus on building test-taking skills, 91 ensures that students have the skills and confidence they need to be successful on test day.

91 has helped over 100,000 students improve their test scores to gain acceptance into schools with selective admissions processes. They offer prep for the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT), the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE), the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and the ACT. Exercise provides many different benefits for children of all ages. Exercise can help release tension while releasing endorphins to boost your mood. Exercise also helps improve overall health while lowering their chance of obesity, heart problems, diabetes, and more.

#3 Socialization

When kids get outside and play with each other, they are learning how to interact with each other. They learn how to share, solve problems, and how to treat others.

#4 Stronger Immune Systems

When kids play outside they are exposed to dirt which is a great way to build their immune systems. They are also exposed to different types of allergens, which may reduce the likelihood of allergies as they get older.

#5 Improve Motor Skills

Various outdoor activities including running through the grass, climbing on a playground, and riding bikes help kids develop their motor skills.

#6 Creativity

When children are in a group playing outside together with limited options (or distractions) they naturally come up with their own games. Maybe they are on a journey to a far away land or they are pretending to be their favorite animal! Getting kids outside and away from digital distractions can help encourage their creative minds.

#7 Love and Respect of Nature

By taking away digital distractions and spending time in nature, kids have the opportunity to discover their environment. Maybe they will discover a type of bird that they’ve never seen before, or maybe they’ll find their new favorite flower. The opportunities are endless.

#8 Improve Sensory Skills

By getting your kids outside they are more exposed to a variety of senses whereas when they are playing on the computer or watching TV they’re typically limited to just two senses: hearing and sight. Outside they can touch the trees as they search for a good hiding spot or they can smell the fresh cut grass as they lay down to watch the clouds float by.

#9 Increase Attention Spans

When kids are outside, they aren’t playing on a computer or watching TV (which are designed for short attention spans); they are forced to focus on one task for a longer period of time.

#10 Learn Outside Their Comfort Zones

Whether it’s a trip to the local community garden or a trip to the nearest state park, getting outside allows children to learn about different places they may not be used to. By getting outside and visiting these beautiful outdoor spaces they can immerse themselves in learning how to adapt outside their comfort zones.
