We’re excited to introduce our 2025 Independent School Tuition Scholars! These outstanding students have shown remarkable dedication to their studies and a commitment to contributing positively to their communities.

At 91, our mission is to help students succeed as they prepare for the ISEE and SSAT. Each year, we recognize exceptional learners with merit-based scholarships, awarded to those who demonstrate the most significant growth on these exams. Recipients of the Independent School Tuition Scholarship are granted $1,000 to support their tuition at their new school.

Meet Noa

We are happy to introduce you to Noa, one of our extraordinary 2024 scholars! By remaining resolute with her practice, Noa increased her score on the SSAT by 17 percentile points!

When it comes to academics, Noa is particularly drawn to the humanities. “Whether it be English or history, there’s so much to kind of delve into,” she explained. Noa is also an avid reader and shared that one of her favorite books that she read last year was A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. “It was really, really interesting to learn about Dickens himself and what a different time period he was writing in,” she added.

In her personal life, Noa is focused on honing her skills as a ballerina. “I train about 28 hours a week at a studio in my town,” she shared. Noa also has a passion for staying involved with her community. “I volunteer at my local synagogue every Sunday during the school year and assist a younger group of children with their class,” she explained. “I also have volunteered a little bit with Flower Petals Adaptive Dance Company… they provide dance lessons to special needs kids.”

Preparation

When asked to reflect on her preparations for the SSAT, Noa said that “91 provided so many resources that helped me prepare.” From webinars to tutoring sessions and comprehensive practice tests, these tools gave Noa a better understanding of the test as a whole, as well as tips on how to approach each section strategically.

One of the biggest lessons Noa said she learned throughout the process was how to manage her time. “Knowing when to skip questions or come back…was really important,” she explained, adding that mastering this skill early on made a significant difference in her performance.

If she were to prepare for the SSAT again, Noa said that she would spend more time with the score analysis on the 91 platform after completing a practice test. “I think using those tools a little more might have helped me a little bit, just to understand kind of where I was at,” she explained.

Advice for Students and Parents

Noa’s advice to other students preparing for the SSAT is to focus on the areas that need the most improvement. “I struggled more on the math portion…so I really decided to dedicate my time…to the math sections,” she said. Noa also emphasized the importance of considering “what other practices I could do in relation to the skills that I was having trouble with.” Sometimes it’s important to spend time practicing both the skill that you’re struggling with as well as foundational or adjacent subjects to improve your overall understanding.

Noa’s dad, Shane, added that it’s important to take practice tests to not only improve your understanding of the material but also to adjust to testing with a time limit. Shane encourages parents to utilize the resources available to them throughout the process as well. “All the resources are there and, I definitely encourage people to take advantage of them,” he added.

New School

Noa is attending Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, Connecticut as a 10th grader. She said she chose Greenwich Academy for its stellar academic reputation.

Meet Yuhao

We are pleased to introduce you to Yuhao, one of our fantastic 2024 scholars! By remaining focused, Yuhao increased his score on the SSAT by 44 percentile points!

Yuhao has a special appreciation for subjects relating to science and history. He particularly enjoys learning about biology and environmental science, and he is equally passionate about world studies. “I know they’re not really related, but they’re like my favorite classes,” he said enthusiastically.

Outside of academics, Yuhao has a variety of creative and athletic interests. “I like to play sports, and I also like to make music by myself,” he said. He plays both guitar and piano and enjoys remixing music to create his own unique sound. In addition to his musical pursuits, Yuhao plays both tennis and basketball and plans to continue these sports at his new school.

Preparation

Preparing for the SSAT was a unique challenge for Yuhao because it was his first time taking a standardized test. His first testing experience was particularly challenging, as he flew from Iceland to Portugal to take the exam while on winter break. Because of these factors, “the first test didn’t go as well,” he said.

By the second test, Yuhao felt significantly more relaxed and prepared. He said that the resources available on the 91 platform, specifically the practice tests, were helpful with growing his confidence before test day. He also noted that taking the computer-based test provided him with “enough time to review all [his] answers” before the end of each section.

If he were to prepare for the SSAT again, Yuhao said he’d try to give himself longer than one month to prepare. Balancing both his schoolwork and SSAT practice proved to be a challenge, especially within such limited time. “I feel like if I had more time to study for the SSAT, my results would have been better,” he concluded.

Advice for Students and Parents

Yuhao’s main piece of advice for future SSAT test-takers is to stay calm and focus on self-care leading up to the test. “Your score is…how it is. It won’t get better if you stress more about it,” he advised. Yuhao also encourages students to get plenty of quality sleep during the week leading up to their test.

Meichun, Yuhao’s mom, had advice for other parents as well. For families who may not be native English speakers and are unfamiliar with standardized tests like the SSAT, it’s important to find outside organizations like 91 to assist with preparation. Meichun also stressed the importance of focusing on vocabulary, especially if your student’s first language isn’t English.

New School

Yuhao is now attending Detroit Country Day School in Detroit, Michigan as a 9th grader. He’s especially looking forward to exploring all of the available clubs, activities, and electives on campus!

Yuhao has worked hard to get where he is today, and we are incredibly proud of his accomplishments. We wish him the best of luck at Detroit Country Day School this year!

Meet Ilyas

We are excited to introduce you to Ilyas, one of our amazing 2024 scholars! By remaining persistent, Ilyas increased his score on the SSAT by 12.5%!

Academically, Ilyas is drawn to math and history the most. He explained that while math isn’t his favorite subject, he appreciates the fact that it’s a subject he’s skilled in. His true passion, however, lies in history. Ilyas is fascinated by social studies and the way that a historical narrative unfolds. “I really like stories that people tell,” he said, “and how you get to interpret it.”

When he isn’t at school, Ilyas enjoys staying active with both fencing and soccer. In addition to sports, Ilyas is a talented musician. “I play piano and cello,” he shared, adding that he enjoys making music in his “music household,” as his brother plays the violin.

Preparation

For Ilyas, the SSAT’s reading section proved to be a serious challenge. “I struggled in the beginning,” he explained. However, the 91 practice exercises, especially the reading questions, became instrumental in his improvement. 

Additionally, taking practice tests helped Ilyas become familiar with the exam’s layout, pacing, and how to approach challenging questions. Ilyas was able to put key test-taking strategies into practice as well. “Like if I’m stuck on a question, I can move on and come back to it,” he shared.

If he were to prepare for the SSAT again, Ilyas said that he would focus on starting early and remaining consistent. “I started to take it more seriously near the end,” he shared, but he believes that he would have achieved an even higher score if he started earlier.

Advice for Students and Parents

When asked what advice he has for students currently preparing for the SSAT, Ilyas stressed the importance of exposing yourself to plenty of material. “Take advantage of as many resources as you can,” Ilyas shared. He also encourages students to spend plenty of time focusing on enhancing their vocabulary to succeed in the Verbal section.

Jessica, Ilyas’s mom, also had some key advice for parents going through the process. “Practicing early and routinely is probably a much smoother path than trying to cram at the end,” she said. Jessica also emphasized that practicing test-taking strategies and understanding the test’s format ahead of time are just as important as focusing on content.

New School

Ilyas is now attending The Commonwealth School in Boston, Massachusetts as a 9th grader. Commonwealth’s fencing team was an especially exciting discovery for Ilyas, and he looks forward to joining!

Ilyas’s passion for learning helped him to succeed on the SSAT, and we’re sure that it will continue to take him far. We wish him the best of luck at The Commonwealth School this year!

Meet Esther

We are delighted to introduce you to Esther, one of our extraordinary 2024 scholars! Through hard work and persistence, Esther increased her score on the ISEE by 26 percentile points!

Esther’s academic strengths have laid the foundation for what she hopes will be a future in the medical field. “Throughout my studies, I realized that my strengths are memorization and dealing with people,” she said with a smile. She’s particularly interested in biology and excitedly shared that she will be taking a biomedical science course this year.

Outside of the classroom, Esther enjoys playing in the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra as a percussionist. This past summer, she traveled to Austria and the Czech Republic for performances. Esther also loves to express herself through creative activities like drawing and dancing–K-pop music is her favorite!

Preparation

When reflecting on how she prepared for the ISEE, Esther found the 91 full-length tests and practice questions to be particularly useful because “they helped me by getting used to the test environment,” she explained.

Throughout the preparation process, Esther also learned that success on the ISEE requires a lot of hard work. “With dedication and effort, it’s manageable,” she shared, adding that “the most important thing to focus on is improvement rather than scores.”

Esther says she wouldn’t change anything about the way she prepared if she were to take the ISEE again. “I would continue to focus on consistency,” she said. “My parents told me not to worry too much about the scores and just do what I can, and I agree with that.”

Advice for Students and Parents

Esther’s main piece of advice for other students preparing for the ISEE is to stay focused while practicing to give yourself the best chance at retaining information. She also recommends that students start preparing in the summer before they’re bogged down with schoolwork and other activities. “It’s really hard to manage both the ISEE and schoolwork at the same time,” she noted.

Esther’s mom, Sabrina, urges parents to focus on encouraging their child throughout the process. “I think it’s really normal for kids to get frustrated during the process.” Remember that you have the opportunity to act as your student’s biggest cheerleader!

New School

Esther is attending Mayfield Junior School in Pasadena, California as an 8th grader. She’s especially excited about continuing as a percussionist by joining the school’s rock band!

Esther’s hard work has taken her far, and we are very proud of all that she has accomplished. We wish her the best of luck at Mayfield Junior School this year!

Meet Bella

We are thrilled to share the story of Bella, one of our exceptional 2024 scholars! Through dedication and perseverance, Bella was able to score in the 99th percentile on the ISEE.

When it comes to academics, Bella is interested in science and math. Among the sciences, she particularly enjoys biology. “I like biology a lot… learning about animals and stuff is a lot of fun,” she said. Bella shares that she also enjoys reading and recently finished Dune by Frank Herbert.

When she isn’t focused on her studies, Bella loves to ice skate and enjoys traveling to new places for competitions. She also enjoys sketching and spending time with her friends.

Preparation

Bella found the 91 platform to be a key resource in her ISEE preparation journey. “Before I discovered 91, I didn’t really know what to learn,” Bella explained. “Most importantly, it provided a guideline for me to study,” she said, emphasizing how helpful it was to have all available ISEE resources in one place. 

One feature that especially stood out to Bella was the percentile feedback: “After you take the practice test, it gives you your percentile so you know how you compare to other people.”

To tackle the vocabulary-heavy portions of the test, Bella found flashcards to be particularly useful. “I learned how to memorize more things in a short amount of time by making flashcards,” she explained.

Advice for Students and Parents

Bella’s biggest piece of advice for future ISEE takers? “I would advise them to start early and not procrastinate,” she said, reflecting on her own preparation process. She also recommended taking a practice test in advance, which was a crucial part of her success.

Bella’s mom, Rui, had similar advice for parents. She encourages families to focus on online practice and tests to improve their skills before test day.

New School

Bella is now attending the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey as a 9th grader. She was drawn in by the beautiful campus but appreciated the friendly, welcoming atmosphere she felt when attending an in-person visit. 

We’re incredibly proud of Bella and her hard work, and we can’t wait to see all that she will achieve at Lawrenceville and beyond.

Meet Ella

Congratulations to Ella, one of our 2023 Independent School Tuition Scholars! Ella was able to increase her SSAT score by 29 percentile points, putting her in the 53rd percentile overall.

Ella is passionate about literature and language arts. Reading about the thoughts and experiences of others motivates her to learn more about how other people view the world. Ella enjoys experimenting with poetry, but she loves to write in any manner that allows her to express herself! Some of her favorite topics to read about and discuss include philosophy and the experience of being a human. 

When she’s not in school, Ella enjoys creating visual art through a variety of mediums. Whether she’s painting on a canvas, capturing photographs, or simply experimenting with basic shapes and lines, Ella is inspired by any creative process that allows her to convey her emotions. 

Preparation

When preparing for the SSAT, Ella learned various test-taking strategies and skills.  The most important skill she learned was time management. Using her time effectively allowed Ella to move through the questions quicker, which gave her the opportunity to answer more questions correctly. In addition to learning strategies and skills, Ella also broadened her vocabulary while practicing for the synonym and analogy questions. 

Throughout the preparation process, Ella learned a lot about areas that needed improvement. The 91 analytics made it easy for her to identify her weak spots, which motivated her to dedicate more practice time towards mastering difficult subjects. Ella says that if she were to prepare for the exam again, she’d complete as many practice tests and problems as possible.

Advice for Students

Ella’s advice for other students taking the test is to study—a lot! Ella says that every second is precious when taking the test, so students should focus on using their time wisely. When you encounter questions that you’re unsure about, Ella recommends flagging the question, moving on, and returning to it  if you have extra time at the end. This strategy ensures that you have the chance to answer as many questions correctly as possible. 

Advice for Parents

Wenting, Ella’s mom, emphasizes the importance of getting started as early as possible to mitigate stress for everyone involved. Wenting also says that parents should make sure their student utilizes all of their resources, so that they get the most that they can from their test practice. She ends with the comment “you can never say ‘I practiced too much’.”

New School

Ella is attending Kent School this fall. The beautiful campus, warm community, and friendliness of the students and staff are what drew her to Kent. Ella is especially excited about the abundance of opportunities available for her to explore! Students are encouraged to select courses that fit their personal interests, and Ella is looking forward to finding classes that will help her as an individual in the future. We are thrilled for Ella and hope that she has a wonderful school year!

Meet Faris

We’re thrilled to introduce Faris, one of our 2023 Independent School Tuition Scholars! Faris increased his SSAT score by 30 percentile points, earning him a spot in the 59th percentile overall!

In school, Faris most enjoys math and Spanish. He’s been taking Spanish for 3 years already and is excited to continue learning the language at his new school. When he’s not studying or doing schoolwork, Faris enjoys lifting weights at the gym, playing with his dog, Rocky, and going to movies with his friends. Earlier this year, Faris challenged himself (and succeeded!) to learn how to solve a Rubik’s cube in approximately 90 seconds!

Preparation

Faris found the 91 practice tests and exercises to be incredibly helpful when preparing for the SSAT. In fact, he made it his goal to complete as many practice tests as possible before exam day. The practice tests helped Faris feel comfortable with the structure and content of the exam. In addition to taking a lot of practice tests, Faris also targeted specific concepts. Practicing higher-level math concepts like slope, pi, and polynomials improved not only his test scores, it also improved his academic performance in school.

Advice for Students

When it comes to preparing for the SSAT, Faris advises fellow students to spend plenty of time studying vocabulary. He recommends that students aim to learn 10 new words a day, along with 6 synonyms for each word. Faris also suggests completing two practice exercises for each section of the test every day. If he were to take the exam again, Faris says he’d aim to complete every single practice exercise, as well as dedicate more time to learning new words.

Advice for Parents

Faris’s mother, Sophia, had some wisdom to share with other parents as well. “You have to be ahead of the game,” she says. Planning as far ahead as you and your student are able to will prevent you from feeling rushed as deadlines begin to approach. Additionally, Sophia recommends that parents make sure their child understands the importance of practice and hard work throughout the testing process. 

New School

Faris is attending school at Meridian Academy. Because of his interest in robotics, engineering, and the medical field, Faris is very excited to explore Meridian’s STEM program. He is hoping to experiment with designing and assembling his own machines this year. We can’t wait to see what Faris does next!

Meet Daibi

We’re excited to introduce Daibi, one of our 2023 Independent School Tuition Scholars! Daibi improved his score on the SSAT by 11%, putting him in the 99th percentile overall!

Daibi is very passionate about STEM, particularly science and engineering. His recent focus has been on exploring computer and software engineering due to his interest in technology. Daibi enjoys anything that requires thoughtful calculations and is an avid problem solver, especially if it can be answered using logic and reasoning. Daibi’s mother, Ebere, explains that his interests change constantly, and that his family is looking forward to seeing where his passions take him next!

Daibi exhibits a “work hard, play hard” attitude, something that can be seen both in the classroom and during his freetime. He loves to participate in sports, especially basketball and swimming, and believes that these activities are just as important to his well-being as his academic pursuits. When it’s time to work, Daibi’s ready to give it his all and strive for greatness! However, he also understands the value in finding time to engage in activities he enjoys.

Preparation

Daibi explains that the offered by 91 were particularly helpful as he prepared for the SSAT. In these classes, Daibi was able to focus on improving his understanding of specific subjects on the exam, such as geometry and vocabulary. He also notes that the 2,200+ practice exercises made it easy for him to incorporate practice into his schedule.

Daibi also highlights the importance of brushing up on your vocabulary before taking the test. Since the SSAT includes questions that require you to come up with synonyms for the words provided, it’s crucial to have a solid foundation in English vocabulary. Daibi says that if he were to take the test again, he’d dedicate even more time to learning new words.

Advice for Students

To be successful, Daibi suggests that students create a study plan that they adhere to as strictly as possible. Decide ahead of time what days you’ll focus on each subject or section of the test, and work diligently. He notes that planning time for breaks is equally as important as the time reserved for studying. “Don’t be afraid of the exam,” Daibi adds.

Advice for Parents

Daibi’s mother, Ebere, encourages parents to support their child throughout the testing process. Ebere believes that what differentiates one test taker from another is simple – practice. She explains that if you focus on guiding your child and providing them with the right resources to succeed, you’ll see their confidence grow exponentially.

New School

Daibi is from Nigeria and will be moving to the U.S. to attend Westtown School in West Chester, PA. Westtown’s excellent STEM program and diverse student body is what drew Daibi to the school. He is looking forward to continuing his studies in a place where he can meet other international students. Although he’s attended boarding school in Nigeria before, his decision to go to Westtown School will take him to an entirely new country! We are confident that Daibi will continue to excel, and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
